ips birdev dhone struggle story

Birdev Siddhappa Dhone's journey from a shepherd's son in rural Maharashtra to securing the 551st rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

Early Life and Background

Born in Yamage village, Kagal taluka of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, Birdev hails from the Dhangar community, traditionally involved in sheep and goat rearing. His family owns just an acre of land, and livestock farming was their primary livelihood. His elder brother serves as a Naik in the Indian Army, and Birdev often assisted his family in tending to their animals.

Education and Early Career

Birdev completed his early education at the local Zilla Parishad school and later attended Jai Maharashtra High School in his village. Demonstrating academic excellence, he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering Pune, graduating in 2020.

Post-graduation, between 2020 and 2021, he worked as a postman with India Post. However, his aspiration to join the civil services remained undeterred. Recognizing the need for dedicated preparation, he resigned from his job and moved to Delhi, facing financial challenges. With support from a friend, he immersed himself in UPSC exam preparations.

UPSC Journey

Birdev's determination bore fruit in his third attempt when he secured the 551st rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. At the time of receiving the news, he was tending to goats near Belgaum, Karnataka. The celebration was modest yet heartfelt, with his uncle adorning him with a yellow turban and applying turmeric powder on his forehead—a gesture symbolizing pride and blessing. A photograph capturing this moment went viral, resonating with many across the nation.

Aspirations and Vision

While Birdev expressed a keen interest in joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), he also conveyed enthusiasm for the Indian Police Service (IPS). He emphasized his commitment to public service, stating, "As an officer, I would like to listen to people – and ensure they are heard."

Community Impact

Birdev's achievement has not only brought pride to his family but has also inspired his entire village and the broader community. His story underscores the importance of perseverance, the value of education, and the potential to overcome socio-economic barriers.
